Blog post 10(costume,props and location)

The 1st-4th screenshots have been put in this photo snack slideshow to highlight the different costumes the artist is wearing. At each point that the costume change,we are taken to a new location. The costumes are quite similar to each other 3/4 of his costumes have a Nike logo on the jumpers and along with those 3 costumes he wears a different hat. Props in this music video are used to amplify the words in the lyric,at 0:32 the artist is seen throwing away iced Fanta over the balcony shortly after hearing him say,"I like my Fanta with no ice", a car is also used a prop which falls into one of the genre conventions used. In this genre(UK grime/rap) girls are also used as part of mise-en-scene and cars too in order to demonstrate their wealth and lifestyle. The locations chosen also compliment the genre conventions as music videos like this tend to be set on the streets, rundown estates,garages/car parks and clubs.

Synergy (RESEARCH)

Name of Artist: Kano

Album Cover:

Image result for made in the manor kano

The key features of the album cover is the grey-scale colour pallet, and the use of pictures that show the artist's past in black and white. The title font is white and in a bold, yet italic style, whereas the majority of the text on the back is black and bold. The photos also use an urban theme, for example with the picture of the terraced housing.

Promotional Content:

As part of promoting his album, Kano released a short documentary detailing his childhood called 'Made in the Manor' - repetition of his album title.

The audience recognises the setting as generally consisting of terraced housing, which again, thematically, gives it an urban feel. We also see old images and photos, such as pictures of Kano's mam.

Music Video:

This music video uses a grey-scale colour pallet, achieved through a filter which was added during editing. Another key feature is the terraced housing, which reinforces the urban theme of the video. In terms of costume, the tracksuits and big jackets are a common feature of the video.

Music Video:

An obvious key feature of this music video is the costumes throughout - there is an emphasis on white summer clothing. However, we also see the terraced housing as part of the urban theme. We also see some footage that has an effect to make it seem 'old' like it has been recorded on a 90's video camera. The setting of the park in good weather also acts as a dominant feature of the video.

Synergy:

Across all of the products, we see a few key features that are repeated to create an artist identity. For example, we have an urban feeling across all 4 products, mostly due to the setting, as the images of terraced housing can be seen in all of them. At the same time, the audience recognises the nostalgic feel of all products, creating a feeling that can be related exclusively to Kano - achieved through the use of old pictures or videos, and also filters and effects with give the impression of being from the past, such as the grey-scale. It is also fair to say that the colour pallet is generally the same; dark, and consisting of a lot of black, white, and grey. As a result, Kano creates a brand identity for his new album across multiple products.

Mainstream vs. Independent (RESEARCH)

Blog Post 8(YouGov Profile on a British artists target audience)

Using YouGov Profiles I was able to conduct some research on Stormzy. He's a British artist and produces songs that fall under the genre of Rap. I did find that the target audience age range was expected, the information given to build a 'picture' of the target audience's lifestyle and interest is what you would associate with a stereotypical view of young adults.

Wretch 32 - Liberation (RESEARCH)

Recently, while looking for inspiration from other music videos, I came across Wretch 32's song 'Liberation'. Interestingly, all the images the audience sees are in black and white, achieved through a use of a filter in editing. This post is a record of an idea and possible intention to use this in bits of our music video - possibly for the chorus OR the verses as a repetitive motif to fit the narrative structure we would expect in a music video (Goodwin's Theory).

Note: This also fits in with the concept of a brand, as we can use this as a general colour pallet to achieve synergy across all our artists products.

-4- What is the purpose of a music video

Costume, Props, Setting in Music Video - RESEARCH

As we've seen in a number of different music videos, there are a wide variety of settings and costumes shown - most of them exist within their separate base tracks. This observation is shown in the Time Toast created, which cannot be embedded due to not being on 'premium'.

https://www.timetoast.com/timelines/1357504

In pictures:

As we can see with music videos, the change of costume usually corresponds to the change of setting. In this genre, clothing using can be defined as 'roadman attire' with sport brands and the setting, as seen here, is usually very urban. Sometimes we see props used, such the Fanta at the start, but only if relevant to the song, besides the genre convention of cars being in the background.

Previous Student Video (Review) - RESEARCH

Without doubt my favourite music video from previous A2 students was no. 4, from Emmanuel, Ariadna, Yuksel, and Joshua (see  https://vimeo.com/channels/858396). The video as a whole has a professional appearance, includes intelligent technical features, and is perfect in terms of mise-en-scene.

This is an example (0:57) of the mise-en-scene being planned perfectly. The actor who was selected to lip-sync fits perfectly the voice of the song, which is incredibly important for the video to look natural. Not only this, the costume, with, for example, the use of the hood, corresponds to the genre conventions which we would expect to see. The props (flowers) and setting (cemetery) help to reinforce the song lyrics, but also amplify them as part of Goodwin's theory.

This time, we see editing being used to add a rhythmic sense to the music video. In this picture (1:04), we see a cross dissolve which not only fits the nostalgic, reminiscent nature of the song, but also is cut on the beat. This picture also manages to capture the variety of shot types - a medium close up and a mid shot both being visible.

Although this exact picture (1:20) does not show it, I enjoyed the slow motion aspect of the video in terms of editing. Not only did this technique capture the sad, reminiscent nature of the song again, it also was pleasing aesthetically. How this group managed to achieve it without the singing being out of sync I do not yet know, but this is a technique I am looking forward to using in our music video. Finally, what was noticeable in relation to other past student videos was the cinematography - the size of the images are different, which is also aesthetically pleasing. Whether this is technology/equipment related I am unsure at the moment, but this is also a format I would like to experiment with.

Target Audience (Kano) - RESEARCH

These photos are taken from YouGov profiler, a website which creates an 'average' profile of a product's or artist's target audience. In this case, Kano, a grime act, was the subject. They live in London as a rule, and interestingly are males aged 25 to 39, and are part of the skilled working class. They work in jobs that involve a lot of money, and possibly as a result have up to 1000 pounds spare money to spend. Interestingly, they enjoy golf and cycling, generally sports more commonly associated with the upper classes. They download music illegally, use ASOS and Spotify, wear Adidas, and shop at Tesco. They like American based acts such as Kendrick Lamar and Rihanna, but also like UK Artists Tinie Tempah and Craig David. They read the sun, and spend up to 40 hours a week on social media, but only 5 watching TV for shows like Eastenders. As a result, the target audience for an act like Kano is very complex and will have to be taken into consideration when branding.

Note: This is based on a limited sample, and further audience research may have to be done to achieve a full picture of the target audience for this genre.

What is the function of a Music Video ? - RESEARCH

Summer Music Video Storyboard

I chose Wretch 32 - Antwi : It's a really interesting video that challenges the common conventions of a music video. Part of it's appeal was the variety of lighting the producer of this text used, which is an aspect of mise-en-scene which could be effective if used in our music video.

-2- Embedded Link To Our Music Video Remake. Identify Base Tracks

During this  music video remake we only have 1 base track. This is due to the fact that we didn't have enough time to finish the editing process therefore we didn't get time to include all the other base tracks that we had recorded.

Music Video Remake (unfinished)

Music Video - Remake (Callum)

There are multiple based tracks used in this video; 4 to be exact. This is not a good example of a music video in this sense, as the original text from Outkast included about 15 with the different angles. However, given the time we had to make it we did manage to include the key base tracks that you would expect from a music video from a band. It was relatively easy to identify the range of base tracks, but a lot more difficult to film the plethora of different shots. Interestingly, we didn't exclusively use base tracks - we used the individual shots of the girls as well. However, overall the use of repetitive shots edited throughout were reflective of a genuine music video.

Blog post 4(need to finish) The function of a music video

Blog Task 4:
What is the function of a music video?
A  music video is a "short film integrating a song and imagery". The main function of a music video is to promote the artist but also the album. However in order to successfully do so the music video needs to 'tell a story' and be visually and audibly engaging to captivate the viewer. To effectively sell the song it has to have certain elements within it to make sure the viewers are able to remember the song.
Video Analysis of Calvin Harris - This Is What You Came For

This video follows the typical conventions used in pop music videos.

Conventions in pop music:
·       The atmosphere and artist are generally portrayed as positive
·       Many times to support the created positive mood the video will consist of bright prominent colours
·       The clothing will be trendy and in style to attract teenagers and young adults who are the intended target audience.
·        The music video generally portrays young people partying and having fun and dancing.
·       At some point in the video a reference of the artist(s) and the name of the song will be made
·       In many pop videos there's a lot of dancing performed by the artists
