Failed After Effects - Track Motion

Tried to do the technique posted about earlier - as you can see, it didn't go very well. It was ambitious at the start but we can continue without it.

Editing Idea - Titles

Although it is part of Thabiti's expertise, I wanted to try and attatch the titles to the image as it moved and wanted to find out how. I researched it and this was the best video I watched:

Hope to try it when I get to college.

Quick Update:

We have been told to make a change/look at a shot at 2:48 in our current Rough Cut. It is slightly weird in terms of framing and we will have a look - this is just an update on Feedback from Louis (again)

Blogging Health Check Feedback

I had some feedback from Louis on my blogging health check last week.

So strength wise, it's good that my audience feedback and planning and research into similar products has been noticed.

However, unfortunately the presentation of the storyboard has let us down throughout - this was Tristen's responsibility, and he promises he will do it. This comes hand-in-hand with the animatic: unfortunately also Tristen's responsibility.

The production schedule was a pitch task that came under Adriana's responsibilities. However, since she is missing in action somewhere, we will have to take over. I think I may try and complete this within the next couple days to save our marks.

Editing Update : Penultimate Day

Before The Deadline:

Feedback From Louisa

This is one of our final pieces of Feedback - in summary, we need to take out some edits such as our flicker and change some cuts. We also may need to add some transitions into the choruses. But we are on the right track hallelujah.

Warp Stabiliser + Slow Motion

As you may or may not know, you can't add Warp Stabiliser on the same clip as you have already added Slow Motion on (on the same project). However, we did find a way round this issue:

Confirmed - Plan for Tuesday

It is confirmed - we are to be filming on Tuesday morning. We, after discussion with Louisa, have decided that for the purposes of structure we should re-film each chorus again with a new location and new costume.

As you can see, we have had in-depth discussion about it through Whatsapp. We will be at college by 9 and back by 10 45. Our location is:

Which is very close to college and a low-rise estate similar to our Estate 1 (West Green). Using a low-rise estate is quite effective for our song - if we went to a High Rise like Barbican it would look too flashy and iconic for our song, which is literally about the Endz. Although a high-rise estate is indeed the 'Endz', it is simpler and more ordinary to have a low-rise, fitting in with our song.

Plan for Tuesday

Example of Structure

I've been looking at some other music videos, specifically ones from the rap genre, which have a clear structure - so I have an idea of what we want.

What I like about this video's structure is the use of locations - the first verse is primarily on the bus, but and although the other verses use a variety of locations, the chorus uses the same location each time. The use of the shop for the chorus provides a clear visual structure to go along with the audio, something which we may look into on Tuesday.

Rough Cut 2 WITH STRUCTURE

Feedback on Rough Cut 2 WITH STRUCTURE Target Audience

We got Feedback for our Rough Cut 3 (Rough Cut 2 W/ Structure) from our Target Audience - Urban Male Youth aged 15-24.

Feedback on Rough Cut 2

We had some feedback from our teacher for our Rough Cut 2, which will be uploaded soon. We have to work on our structuring mainly, and we will upload a rough cut with this structuring hopefully today also.

Blue Stuff

Tranisitions

We've been discussing Transitions to make it obvious our chorus and verse are different, as using a motif transition as they change will help our structure. Thabiti has some ideas, but we have been doing some research into our genre to see what they do:

This video, by Ray Niro, uses some good transitions going into/ out of the chorus. At 55 seconds, it uses a shake transition to exit the chorus which we could use - it is obvious we are going into a different part of the song. It is the same at 2:29, where it speeds up before jumping to show the transition to the chorus. These are aspects we may implement into our video using After Effects.

Teacher Feedback - Rough Cut

Our teacher gave us some quality feedback on our rough cut, and we have decided to upload it and summarise the main points we need to change:

- Our first cut between the Church and The Rec is 'jumpy'
- Make sure we don't cut in the middle of a bar i.e. after "people" not in it
- Get the sequence down first before we add edits (colour grading etc)

This email from Louis helps clarify how we can change the jumpy look at the beggining.

These we will change on/before next Tuesday

UPDATE: Website Alteration

We've added a blog to our website: publicising our Rough Cut as a promotional video, which we thought we should add here to show our response to target audience research.

Rough Cut

Editing the Website: Update

Off the back of our Audience Feedback, we added a section to our website; the biography page!

Interview with Director/Producer Tristen!

Editing Ideas

At 1:36 in this video, the tempo of the song changes, and as a result the tempo of the cuts in the music video increases. This adds a narrative to the video without the song having a clear story, and in my opinion, makes it more interesting. For our video, I want to try to have less cuts at the start, but after maybe the first or second chorus, increase the saturation of cuts so it is more engaging.

Survey Results - The Website

The results from our survey are, overall, positive. The majority of our target audience appear to like the website, and as the first question shows, almost 90% of them think it is aesthetically pleasing - a reflection on the minimalist look we went for.
It is a good sign that our website is easily recognisable, as our public clearly acknowledge it is for an artist, suggesting that our layout fits the conventions of other websites.
More importantly, the genre is obvious: whether it be through the pictures of Adonis or his name itself, the target audience think he is a rap artist - more than 80%, and 5% think it is grime, a form of rap anyway. This reflects positively on the website as it achieves what we want it to.
In terms of practicality, the website is easy to navigate for 100% of people, and in relation to branding Adonis' face is clearly recognisable and out there as it is obvious it is him on the page.
Looking to improving the website, the suggestions can be categorised:
- Add more videos/pictures/promotional material
- Links to twitter/youtube/instagram more obvious
- Short profile page on Adonis
- Merchandise

Obviously, the merchandise would be hard to add as we have none, but the other suggestions are good and plausible possibilities.

Evidence Editing - After Effects

Our aim in this part of our editing session was to add Black Bars to our image as the song starts, which pull down to reveal our artist. We did this in After Effects, after importing the image from Premiere Pro. Here is the evidence of this progress - the result will be revealed in our Rough Cut 1!

Synchronising Evidence

While editing, we spent a lot of time making sure our base tracks were synchronised to the music. Here, we see an example of this on one of our more difficult shots as it was dark and the music was quiet, and there was only one or two lines where we could see Thabiti's lips moving clearly as well.

Creating a Website for ADONIS

We created a WIX website for our artist as part of his marketing and branding campaign. It isn't perfect yet, and we are still working on it, but as a preliminary idea we believe it could help Adonis with his publicity:

Behind The Scenes / Evidence Of Filming

Trying to Warp Stabilise - Editing

I had some success using the Warp Stabiliser, as we applied it to a clip which was very shakey. However, it did crop the image. We tried to alter this by changing the settings, but we had black lines in our video sometimes. We may use the synthesise edges in our real project, however at this stage it would have taken too long to render for a clip we may use.

Filming - Review

Using Warp Stabiliser in Premiere Pro (Editing)

Although we are only in the early stages of editing (syncing the images up to our song), we are aware that some of our images, as inevitable when walking backwards, are a little shakey. What I've been interested in is stabilising them using our editing software, and did some research on how to do it. This video tells us to use a warp stabiliser on Premiere Pro, and often with the default settings on it the images turn out well. However, although it may stabilise the images we have it may affect the perimeters, but I am hoping and counting on being able to move around the settings so we see the clips as we want them to be seen AND stabilised at the same time. We will record us playing around with these settings when we can.

Costume Changes

Recent changes to our costume plan has led us to post on why and how we have deferred from our original plan.

As you can see, we have stuck with our original colour scheme of black, white, and grey, fitting in with our urban theme. Our synergy and brand image has remained the same in terms of sports / casual brands (Nike and Supply and Demand), but we have scrapped the idea of Adidas being our brand - part of this was practical, as Tristen's Adidas clothes did not fit Thabiti well, but also as we thought most of the Adidas clothing we had available had a wider colour scheme than we wanted.

As is also obvious in the image, we are not using our original idea of tracksuit bottoms - they didn't go with the rest of the costume without looking out of place.

However, we have changed costume 3 times across each location, as planned, and kept our key visual image of Thabiti's cross in most of our shots. The only bit where we don't was for a practical reason - his first one broke. Apart from this, our costume is consistent and clear.

Survey Results

This survey has been quite useful in terms of concluding our artists name - we were pretty sure this was going to be the name of our artist but this has helped confirm it.

The first question tells us that 2/3 of our target audience believe the name fits our genre; this is a clear majority and the remaining 1/3 could just believe it because they are not familiar with the range of grime artist names out there currently.

Question 2's results showed very good signs for us: if our target audience can remember the name of our artist easily - which almost 90% could - then we are on to a winner in terms of branding.

Number 3 shows that the etymology of 'Adonis' is unclear, however this is not a worry - if anything, we could argue it means our audience will be captivated and interested to research why he is called this.

4 shows a variety of responses: some know it is a greek god, others associate it with a brand, and some thing of a movie. This is a good sign for our branding, as any association is good for memory, meaning 'Adonis' is a quality name for our artist.

Update: Locations

Good news! This morning I called the church on West Green and we got conformation that we can film there. They have a service untill 11 but we plan to go to the estate across the road first

They gave us permission on the basis that we were doing it for educational purposes and with the condition our song wasn't rude.

Research - Artist Name

We have set up a questionaire for market research into the name 'Adonis', available below:

We will collect the responses by Thursday.

Colour Grading Tutorial

We recently went to a tutorial on how to do colour grading so we are competent in using it by the time post-production comes.

Filming Progress

As previous posts have shown, our group has been looking for a way to use the camera stabiliser with the college's DSLR camera. However, on Tuesday 1st November, disaster struck. We had been filming for about an hour and got some solid base tracks, especially of the first verse. However, at about 11, the stabiliser failed on us - the camera dropped from arm height off the stabiliser and the DSLR broke into three pieces.

We were distraught, especially as we requested the camera especially. It has been sent off for repair and further discussions are required, but our technicians believe it wasn't due to negligence and put it down to an accident.

In terms of our coursework, we lost an hour of footage and were lucky to be able to film again on Thursday. We have booked the camera for the long weekend, so hope to make up this time that we missed on Tuesday.

However, we are hopeful for the future and Tristen predicts "The greatest comeback in A2 Media History"

Storyboard AND Animatic

I decided to storyboard the first verse and chorus, along with the start of the second, so you can see a general idea on the structure of the video - this repeats itself up to 3:17, then continues, before stopping again at 3:51 - this is the start of the end.

The animatic can be viewed below:

Shot List COMPLETE

Shot List - Draft 1

This is the start of our shot list coming into existence: the yellow highlighted parts make up our chorus, and we have done up to around our 50th shot. While doing this, we have decided to not introduce all our settings (and therefore costumes) at the same time, and will slowly add new tracks for the chorus and verses.

Pitch Feedback

The Feedback from our pitch was, in general, positive. The audience appreciated the thought that had gone into location planning, and praised the audience research due to its detail. We also received feedback about our branding: we had a clear idea of our key elements that will make our artist recognisable, which tied into our costume planning also.

However, we did receive some points to work on:

  • To research how to do the Slow Motion shots - looking at double-speed etc.
  • To achieve a full Storyboard/Shot List so we have clear plan for filming
  • Complete an animatic to work out where cuts are

We watched the second half of this video to help us work out what to do for filming our slow motion shots, which we will experiment with when filming and editing.

Costume Pitch Task (TRISTEN)

- 12 - Industry (Thabiti)

Who would be signed to our artist and why?
  • We plan on keeping the artist independent as that seems to be what is admired more in our genre. A lot of the audience consider artists who have signed to a label as sellouts and therefore don't give them as good a reception as they got before they signed to a label. Also, fans consider the albums made by artists after they have signed to a label to be more restricted and controlled than the albums they used to release , as the artists them have the label looking over their shoulder to make sure they make an album that meets their requirements.
Will your song be available for internet download only ? if so why ?

  • Yes our song will be available for internet download only as it is the media platform that is most used by our target audience, nowadays albums and singles don't make as many sales as they used too, even albums made by the worlds most popular artists. as we are independent, spending money on producing a physical copy , which may not make us the profit in return isn't worth the risk, especially as we don't have a label offering us financial support. Also, if the single was available on the internet then the audience will be able to listen to it while they are out and have it on their phone. And since our target audience are known to be more tech-savvy. it will be more convenient for them to have it as an internet download.

-10- After Effects, Green-Screening and Colour Grading (Thabiti)

We don't plan to use green screen in our music video as it doesn't suit the genre of song we have selected. The genre and theme of the song is talking about what its like to live in an urban environment. That topic is most accurately presented by filming real footage from those areas. Therefore a green screen will not be needed.

Colour grading on the other had is something that we will use throughout the music video. We plan of making the colours and tone a little bit darker than the natural colour to make it look a little more grimy and dirty. We don't want out music video looking too joyous and bubbly seeing as that isnt the tone of the son.

an example of the type of colour grading we plan to use is this

the colour grading used in this is very subtle , this in my opinion is the best kind of colour grading for our genre as the viewer doesn't immediately notice that the colour has been editing , but it still holds the same effect.
